COMEDY CENTRAL
TOMMY JOHNAGIN/Stand Up Comedy 2: Comedy Central's digital releases feel underground even when they are mainstream. A stand up in the stand up tradition who isn't afraid to work blue at the early show (separating him from the old school), Johnagain is a really funny cat that knows how to be right in the moment with contemporary topics cable TV has taken the taboo away from. The sex and drug humor is ladled out freely and the laughs flow just as easily. Check it out.

ECM
KONITZ-MEHLDAU-HADEN-MOTIAN/Live at Birdland: A bunch of well traveled jazzbos and an old soul on piano join forces for an old school jam session on classic tunes, but the kicker is that it's an ECM old school jam session. Lots of cool jazz with a cerebral edge, you haven't heard these songs done like this before (probably because after these cats have been playing them for 60 years they've gotten bored and needed new changes). Given their histories, you wouldn't have thought these guys wrote the book on cool, but they are no strangers to improv---and that's where they really kick it. Old school brought into the present is on deck here. And this is a good time to send out good thoughts to Lee Konitz for all the years of good vibes he's given us.
