ANZIC
ELI DEGIBRI/Israeli Song: Even if you don't know the first thing about this sax man, his band is Brad Mehldau, Ron Carter and Al Foster. Interested now? Degibri's fifth outing as a leader finds him in great shape as well as great company as he tears it up New York style with way more Fifth Avenue showing that his Tel Aviv roots would belie. A tasty, contemporary tenor date that is on the money throughout, it might be sitting down jazz but it'll be hard to keep still as the proceedings proceed. Hot stuff.

NEW EARTH
TERRY OLDFIELD/Glastonbury Tor: The Oldfield reissue program rolls on mightily with this trip through the land of the Celts. This set only has three extended tracks since the Celts believe that only three candles are needed to light up all darkness. With flutes and chants harkening back to the golden age of alt.new age, this set is well designed for restful moments when the seeker goes within and shuts out the maya. A sweetly created neo-classical session that will have you traveling through the mists in no time. Well done.

TERRY OLDFIELD/Spirit of the World: An impressionistic, audio travelogue in the best sense of the concept, Oldfield pays tribute to the ancient races that were the first populations of the earth. Since there's no one around to say if he's right or wrong, better to side with right and enjoy the ride. From the farthest corner of his imagination to your headphones, this is what PBS would love to come up with for pledge nights for the real egghead that wants to tap his toe along the way. One of those dates that really is a movie for your mind, you can write one as this soundtrack unfurls. It's so nice when musos can be clever in the service of the music as opposed to clever in service of cleverness itself.

TERRY OLDFIELD/Spirit of Africa: From the giraffes running across the inside liner to the opening notes sounding like sunrise over the Serengeti, Oldfield does a great job of capturing the spirit of exurban Africa for a white boy with a lot of frequent flyer miles. Another one of his dazzling sonic paintings, Oldfield is a great tour guide, Sahib, and he knows the nooks and crannies of where the Berbers rest and the animals play. A wonderful journey through an Africa that used to be.

SOUNDBRUSH
RAUL JAURENA/Fuerza Milonguera: A little bit tango, a little bit neo-classical, a little bit cartoon music, the Grammy winning bandon player is in top form with a genre busting date that fits right into his sweet spot and comfort zone but is so wily and charming that you don't notice how it pulls you along the water as it's dances out over the waves. The fusion going on here is that this is an up market, ethnic recording that anyone can enjoy. Structured in chapters, this mind movie is a smooth ride that you only requests you to sit back and enjoy. Everyone here is a top shelf player and they know how to strut their stuff without overwhelming. A must world beat date to put on your list.

ROGER DAVIDSON QUINTET/Brazilian Love Song: So, here's a gringo that's been writing Brazilian music for 30 years and really enjoys his work. Here, we find him rounding up some pals to help him take a walk down memory lane, playing tunes that will have you wondering where you heard them before, even though you probably haven't unless you are a real samba hipster. Tasty stuff that could have easily come from the beach towns of Brazil, this might be samba for gringos, but don't write it off lightly, it works throughout.

STEEPLECHASE
SCOTT LEE/Leaving: One of the good things to come out of the recession is creative musicians trying to challenge themselves as opposed to go off in search of the lost chord at the expense of everything else. This bass ace rounds up some like minded pals that have been in the pursuit of the cosmic groove for the last decade but this set finds them in hipster club mode where the drinks and music flow with equal ease. A nice, low key date that is all after hours, Lee and the gang let you know it's midnight some where in the world and it's time to mellow out accordingly. Well done.

WHIRLWIND
PATRICK CORNELIUS/Fierce: A solid showcase of the new guard to strut it's stuff. Here we have a new sax player at the center of the action that embraces the New York tradition with both hands and is in charge of a crew that knows how to play follow the leader. A touch on the minimalist side, Cornelius knows how to honk and skronk but keep it melodic while letting the chops fly. A great find for left leaning tastes looking to hedge their bets on the future now. Tasty, fun stuff throughout.
