INGRID FLITER/Chopin-The Compete Waltzes: Last year, Fliter’s Chopin set was a real barn burner. Next year is the 200th birthday of Chopin and it is sure to make some waves in the classical world. What sense would it make for her not to Fliter back to the Chopin block again? This is one of those sets where you trip over yourself for using ‘delightful’ too many times for lack of a better modifier. The player, the playing and the music are all delightful. If Fliter decided to become the Chopin master and simply ride that to glory the rest of her career, no one would fault her for it. She’s at one with the music and she really makes it sing.
FRANK SINATRA/New York: An oldies radio host always used to hock me about all the Sinatra that must have been recorded live and is laying around somewhere. Like I could do something about it, right? And? So? Here we are 11 years after Frankie has left us and we finally get the tip of the ice berg the radio host was hocking about. With only 4 cds and 1 dvd to work with, and all of the recordings are locused in New York, hence the theme and title, the vault has begun to swing open. All it took was 50 million in front from Rhino to get it done. All previously unreleased, live big apple Sinatra, from intimate to swinging and at various points of his career, he was the voice, he was the real deal, he was the one that had it all. Sure, you’ve got the songs at least 4 times over, but you don’t have these versions, and as music is becoming less important, these unreleased sessions are rising in stature. This is/was music. Probably the broad based holiday music gift for this year, this collection is a wonder. Maybe not a revelation but a great valentine from one of the true masters and owners of the pop song. The dvd ain’t bad either. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
